The Brick Wall Method: ten minutes is a perfectly good place to start.

A daily practice to break the pattern of complacency for good, without re-traumatizing yourself to get there. For you if you know you're capable of more but freeze the moment it's your turn to look at your own life.

About ten minutes, a notebook and a pen.

  • You've done therapy on and off for years, helpful sometimes, never life-changing, and expensive
  • You've quietly accepted 'well, this is just my life,' no crisis, just resignation
  • You feel a flash of real jealousy toward someone who seems to have it more together than you
  • You watch someone close to you and think 'I don't want to end up like that'
  • You sweep almost everything under the rug to keep the peace, your own needs most of all

You've sat down to journal and stopped yourself before you even started: this notebook isn't pretty enough, you only like your handwriting with one specific pen you don't have right now.

You've felt a real question start to surface on the page, and before you finished the thought you were already reaching for your phone, or suddenly remembering a dish that had to get done right now.

You book a hair appointment without a second thought. Ten minutes on your own notebook still feels indulgent.

You've caught yourself mid spiral and thought, it's not even that bad, other people have real problems, and used that to shut the whole feeling down before you let yourself feel it.

It wasn't you.

Tonight you'll fill out your Values and your 100 Accomplishments list, so by the time you open to Day 1 tomorrow morning, you already have real evidence in hand instead of a blank page.

I ended up back living with the person I'd spent most of my life avoiding. I was broke, dealing with chronic health struggles, and reaching for wine most nights just to get through it. I'd already read the books and listened to the podcasts. None of it had turned into anything that actually changed my day to day. This practice is what did. If it got me out of where I was, it can get you out of where you are.

  • If you're looking for a quick fix with no reflection involved, this isn't it.
  • If what you're carrying feels bigger than a notebook can hold, this is built to run alongside a trauma-informed therapist, not replace one.

Is this therapy?

No. It's a daily practice, not a replacement for care from a licensed mental health professional, and it says so plainly inside.

What if I miss a day?

That's built in. The whole practice is designed around showing up more than you don't, not showing up perfectly.

What if I sit down and have nothing to write?

There's a floor for exactly that day. Three to five minutes, three things you're grateful for. That still counts.

I've done therapy before and it didn't change much. Why would this?

Because this isn't about talking in circles about the same thing for months. You work on one brick at a time, you get a real-time tool to use the next time it happens, and then you move to the next one.

You already know you're capable of more. This is the version small enough to actually start.
